dcterms.abstractA batchwise investigation for the performance of ammonia removal by ozonation with Br in film developing wastewater and a pilot scale study for evaluating the possibility of using the ozonation with Br for in film developing wastewater are described. Diluted spent solution from a typical film developing machine was used for the study. O3gas was fed in the sample by an ozone generator and the NH3-N and COD content in the sample was tested periodically by nesslerization method and closed reflux method respectively. According to the study result, ammonia in the film developing wastewater can be completely removed by ozonation with suitable Br/N ratio even in the neutral pH condition. Also, most of the COD in the wastewater, including some non-ammonia nature COD containing chemical, can be reduced significantly during the ozonation process. In the ozonation process, the reaction is a two stage first ordered process (lag phase and log phase) with respect to initial ammonia concentration and Br/N ratio. The kinetic constant of the process is directly proportional to the Br/N ratio and is inversely proportional to the initial ammonia concentration. Nevertheless, the removal of ammonia is inhibited during the lag phase of the ozonation process due to the presence of ozone scavengers in the film developing wastewater and insufficient supply of HBrO in the initial period of the process. Excess ozone is consumed to remove the ozone scavengers in the wastewater before the starting of the ozonation with Br process.en_US
