A study of the validity and reliability of the pediatric evaluation of disability inventory (Chinese version) in children with cerebral palsy in Hong Kongen_US
This dissertation describes the initial validation process of a relatively new assessment tool, the Pediatric Evaluation of Disability Inventory (PEDI). The PEDI is used for children of age six months to seven and a half years. It assesses the functional capacities, the level of caregiver assistance, and the modifications needed (if any) for these children with respect to the Self-care, Mobility and Social Function Domains. In this study, the already translated Chinese version of the PEDI which had previously undergone a pilot study for its content validity, was tested in the following manner in this study. These were the content validity, the inter-rater reliability and the intra-rater reliability. A panel of experts consisting of four experienced paediatric therapists rated the content validity of the PEDI (Chinese version) in relation to the clarity and consistency of this translated version. The relevancy of this tool for used on Hong Kong Chinese children was also studied. The study recruited fifteen children aged between six months and seven and a half years with spastic cerebral palsy. These children's caregivers were interviewed by a group of physiotherapists who conducted the interviews in pairs and acted as raters. The inter-rater reliability and the intra-rater reliability of the Chinese version of the PEDI were determined by comparing the scorings between the two raters, and those by the same rater in two occasions, respectively. The results were positive, showing initial support for the content validity, inter-rater reliability and intra-rater reliability of the Chinese version of the PEDI, and its potential use on Hong Kong Chinese children. The study procedures and results were discussed. Future directions for study on the PEDI (Chinese version) have been suggested. This study can be viewed as a preliminary study for a series of further studies for validating the Chinese version of PEDI and for assessing its potential use in Hong Kong.en_US
