dcterms.abstractThere are only a few logistics companies that using e-learning for their staff training and development at the moment. It is envisaged that the use of e-learning in logistics industry will grow slowly due to the cost savings in training. This dissertation attempts to examine the use of e-Learning in the freight forwarding business. On the other hands, other methods of learning which included mentoring, classroom-based, work-based and action learning, are reviewed. This offers a comparison between traditional learning and e-learning. In order to have an in-depth understanding of the e-learning users, the ethnographic approach is adopted for this study. The researcher becomes a participant observer of the group being studied. This is to help prevent the act of observation from modifying the natural behavior of the individual or group being observed. Maersk Logistics (a freight forwarding company) is selected in this study because the researcher is working in this group. Exel (freight forwarding market leader) is also selected as a benchmark for freight forwarding industry. The effectiveness of using e-learning in these companies are investigated. Other logistics non e-learners are also surveyed. The outcomes of the survey reveal that learners always prefer to have some interaction with the trainers to get direct support during their study, whereas they also prefer to have the flexibility of taking the course at any time and location offered by the e-Learning mode. The study also found out that it is not enough e-learning training package for corporate training. Therefore corporation will be more willing to introduce e-Learning if they have the appropriate software ready and they can gain substantial cost savings. The Study concluded that there is only a small percent of staff training via e-Learning mode in freight forwarding due to the learning barrier of the users and lacking appropriate e-learning training package. The Study recommends to design a kind of "blended" or "mixed" learning mode with a certain percentage of e-Learning and some traditional learning program.en_US
