Nurses' experiences in the changes of quality of care resulted from the Hospital Authority's new management initiatives between 1990-2001en_US
The establishment of the Hospital Authority in 1990 brought dramatic changes to the Hong Kong health care system and its new management initiatives strongly influenced nurses' experiences in the quality of care. To enhance our understanding of their experiences, a phenomenology was conducted and fifteen informants including nursing officers, nurse specialists, nurse educators, and registered nurses took part in this study. These informants were referred through the snowball sampling method from one teaching and two non-teaching institutions and all of them had more than ten years of working experience under the Hospital Authority. Hence this study thoroughly explored nurses' experiences over the past decade (1990 - 2001) and the phenomenon concerning the impact of new management initiatives and quality of care was compiled under the themes of resources, organization, team collaboration, partnership with patients and the nurses themselves. These themes interact with each other and closely worked to facilitate the changes in the quality of care. On one hand, this study reflects the effectiveness of the HA 's strategies; on the other hand it also serves as a reference for future quality planning. It is hoped that by exploring and reflecting on the nurses' experiences, one can make further improvements in the health care management strategies and quality of care can be enhanced further.en_US
