Abstract: Nowadays, plastic material is one of most common material in manufacturing industry, the plastic product can be made in a very accurate and precise form. It is going to replace some of the metallic material in some aspect. So that the first step to get a high quality of the designed product is to make the right choice of the plastic material. In the industrial field, the calculation of the price quotation for a designed product is playing an important role. Whenever if the calculation is not accurate enough, it will directly affect the cost of the product. Therefore, a high accuracy price quotation calculation can contribute to the profit of the product. On the other hand, a high quality of the product built on a good, and without defect's injection molding process. This process requires an expertise to set up the machine and monitor the whole process as well as the trouble shooting. Therefore, resort may be make to a computer technology known as expert system. By using expert system, which can help the non expertise to have a right decision making and fast problem solving ability. By achieving the goal, the organization can reduce and optimize the resource, it results in a cost reduction and also increase the competitive power among the competitors. The main objective of this project is to develop an expert system that can help the non expertise. The work consists of six different consultations via the commercial Expert System Shell M4. They can be grouped as two parts, first part regards as a design section which included the "Plastic Selection" and "Price Quotation" consultatjon. The expert system ask the user simple questions, by answering these questions, the system help the user to select a material effectively and intelligently, as well as which can calculate the quotation price of the designed product accuracy. Second parts of the project mainly concern with the injection molding process. Through the consultation, a successful and cost effective injection molded part can be available. Which have the consultation on the following four areas, i) provides the molding information of the selected plastic material by "Material Properties" ii) provides the initial parameters setting for the corresponding material by "Initial Parameter Setting", iii) during the injection molding process, there will have different injection molding defects encountered, remedy suggestion can be provided by "Defects Shooting" consultation, ix) finally, when the injection molding process face with the problem of machine breakdown, the procedure of how to fix the problem can be obtained by "Machine Maintenance" consultation. The M4 Kernel is the heart of M4. It is the forward and backward chaining inference engine, and the symbolic pattern matching. Most of all, it is an embeddable, linkable library of subroutines. M4 Kernel contain abject code modules that support object-oriented programming and dBase III manipulation. But, it lacks a Graphic User Interface that allows the knowledge and information effectively communicate with the user. Therefore, a Graphics User Interface is added so as to display the knowledge and information graphically.
