dcterms.abstractThe objective of this dissertation report is to present an intelligent approach to switching sequence operations in a power system substation by the use of an expert system. The expert system is implemented in TURBO PROLOG used to formalize the sequence of switching operations and a typical Hong Kong transmission station is used as an example for testing the validity of the approach. The expert system developed for sequence switching provides the operators in a control centre using control computer with intelligent assistance and support in automatic switching functions. Sequence switching is one of the basic and principal operational items in electrical substations. Automatic sequence switching has been an important pursuit in the field of substation automation since digital computers were applied in transmission substations in the 1960s. Substation switching includes interlocking and sequence switching. The former describes inter-restrictions and constraints required for safety in switching operations. The latter describes reconfiguration of the substation switching network under normal operation or after abnormal events, and requires solution of the sequence problem. In the end both depend upon a sequence switching strategy. Computer-based methods for interlocking and sequence switching in substations have been developed. Early works used Boolean logic to express the relationship between substation switches. Microprocessor aided interlocking of substations is made possible by decreased cost and increased capabilities of such equipments. Expert system technology has captured the interest of power system engineers in many fields including substation automation. Obviously, the addition of expert system technology to an existing substation computer software system improves its intelligence and capability. A special-purpose software program running on micro-computer is written in Turbo Prolog for on-line data acquisition. It provides a communication channel between the expert system and the transmission SCADA environment with real-time databases by means of a modem. So the expert system as an operational did can monitor and assess the changing system states in an on-line environment to give gross estimations to the operators. In this project, a knowledge based modelling of a typical switching station in Hong Kong in a hierarchical structure is successfully produced which shows the topological status of connectors and live parts. It also successfully demonstrates the application of such knowledge base ideas into switching automation.en_US
