dcterms.abstractThis dissertation describes an approach for converting relational schemas into a semantic data model of higher level of abstraction and describes how reverse engineering techniques are related to the conversion process. The paper begins by explaining how maintenance has been ignored and why it is important for all systems. The relation of maintenance to a system development life cycle is discussed in detail. Different maintenance techniques, for example, reverse engineering, re-engineering , restructuring and etc., are then introduced. The relevance of reverse engineering in this dissertation is revealed and discussed. An algorithm for the conversion is proposed. The derived algorithm is based on criteria and concepts proposed in a previous research of the same kind. At least four main input sources for the conversion are identified, however only two of them are used in the proposed algorithm. The algorithm is discussed in a descriptive manner with many examples to illustrate the principles used. Validity of the proposed algorithm is also tested.en_US
