Abstract: The rapid growth of mobile communications since the introduction of GSM has challenged the industry for designing telephone handsets of reduced size, cost and power consumption. Cellular telephone handsets have been designed to have dual-frequency capabilities. Low profile structure or internal antenna has been the main stream of designing antenna for handsets. The Planar Inverted-F antenna (PIFA) offers reduced size over traditional microstrip antenna because they operate at quarter-wave rather than half-wave resonance. The PIFA also offers much improve bandwidth over the wire inverted-F antenna. The design of antenna for mobile phone handset depends on the implementation of simulation of tools that can accurately model general topologies. In this report, a dual-frequency ( GSM 900 & 1800) U-shaped slot PIFA has been designed and analyzed by Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) algorithm.
