Gordon Wu's kingdom : built up through strategic managementen_US
A firm can gain an extensive growth through proper strategic management. The successful development of Hopewell Holdings Ltd. in the last twenty years is a good example. It was only a medium size local property developer in the early 1970s. However, by the late 1980s, it had already became an international enterprise specializing in regional infrastructure development. The strategies adopted by Hopewell Holdings Ltd. were very special, aggressive and unique, and have been re-constructed through the strategy tracking method in this study. Strategy tracking is an approach to identify and analyze the strategies adopted by an organization by tracking the actions and decisions that shaped the organization's history (Mintzberg & Waters, 1984: p.62 to p.93). The annual reports from 1973 to 1995 are essential source of information for the strategy tracking exercise. Based on the result of strategy tracking exercise, the major 'business tools' used by Hopewell Holdings Ltd. are identified. By integrating the external environment into the result of the strategy tracking exercise and business tools analysis, the whole development history of Hopewell Holdings Ltd. from 1972 to 1995 are divided into several stages for discussion and analysis. The discussion of each stage of development includes the mission of the stage, the external environment, the strategic events and the preparation work for the next stage. Finally the overall strategies adopted in each stage are summarized and discussed. The strategies selected by Hopewell Holdings Ltd. are found to be appropriate because they match the external environment, make best use of the firm's strength, and adopt appropriate risking taking. Due to stable top management and strong leadership, Hopewell Holdings Ltd. could implement the strategies efficiently.en_US
