Design and development of a retail information systemen_US
This dissertation describes the analysis, design and development of a Retail Information System by using an Object-oriented approach. The system will be used by the executives of a small retail chain store. The Retail Information System will be a kind of Executive Information System on Sales Monitoring and Sales forecasting. The objective of this EIS is to provide an easier way to monitor sales performance timely and to provide more reliable, accurate prediction on the sales revenue from the retail chain stores of a book and stationery company. Object oriented approach will be adopted for the design and development of this system because of its widely use of graphic user interface which are best delivered by object oriented programming language. Also, object orientation is a hot topic in IT industry. Exploration to this topic by prototyping a system would be helpful to review and, evaluate to this approach. 38 objects classes categorized in four areas were abstracted and designed for modeling the RIS system. 15 key services were described for use in delivering the sales monitoring and sales forecasting features. The prototype of the RIS system was implemented on PC-based windows environment. Microsoft Visual Basic for Windows version 3.0 is being used as the programming language. There are about 2,400 lines of code written for this system. The prototype was tested and evaluated by all the users (N=8) with respect on the achievement of objectives, easiness of use, and motivation on more frequent use of the system. The overall results is acceptable but more elaboration on the system was suggested. Some issues of object-oriented approach was highlighted. Object reuse, variety of approaches, lack of object standards, and data administration are discussed. It is concluded that object-oriented approach is a good approach in rapid application development (RAD). Visual Basic is one of the best OO programming languages for professional and non-professionals. OO approach provides object/class reuse if well-planned in advance.en_US
