dcterms.abstractNoise sources in a dense residential environment are usually associated with ground transportations (for example vehicles and train). The high-rise buildings erected on both sides of the roads give rise to the reverberation, which tends to increase the noise levels. Such an increase in the sound pressure level, however, depends very much on the scattering and reflecting properties of the building facades and their forms. A detailed investigation using a 1:20 scale model was done to study the underlying acoustics. The Line source and Spark source were used to study the sound pressure level and the reverberation time in a total of seven different building facades construction cases. The changes of the sound pressure level and the reverberation time in different cases were also measured and compared. The four sound levels, equivalent sound level (Leq) and L10, L50 and L90 in different positions in the seven cases were also investigated. The experimental data shows that the sound pressure level and the reverberation time are higher when they are recorded at positions which are nearest to the noise sources. The impact of the construction and orientation of the building facades on the sound pressure level and the reverberation time is found to be significant. The results of such experimental work are useful in environmental noise control and town planning. Such studies should be done before construction of new buildings.en_US
