Traditionally, the extent of system usage is one most important factor determing the success of information systems. However, although employees are in general mandated to use implemented systems in organizations, such mandatory context does not gurantee the extent and the quality of employees' system usage. In this vein, the concept of symbolic adoption, which reprensents one's highest motivational state for applying an innovation, can be particularly meaningful for managers to identify the characteristics that help employee users to voluntarily accept information technology innovations. This dissertation reviews literature in such areas as information system usage, self-determination theory, intrinsic motivation theory, extrinsic motivation theory, and symbolic adoption theory ;and then proposes a research model that includes autonomy, relateness, competences and perceived usefulness as the antecedents for symbolic adoption, and that symbolic adoption affects infusion use. We conducted two waves of surveys by collecting data from CRM system users in ChongQing Unicom. The data was analyzed by using SPSS and PLS. The result supported the proposed model and associated hypotheses. This study contributes to theory in two ways. Firstly, based on TAM, motivation theory, self-determination theory, the study offers a theoretical model expaling the factors affecting symbolic adoption in the context of Chinese telecom industry. This model may also serve as a reference for IS symbolic adoption in other industries. Secondly, consistent the Karahanna and Agarwal (2006), this dissertation further verifys that among the four sub-dimensions of symbolic adoption, use commitment, effort worthiness, heightened enthusiasm are the salient ones, whereas mental acceptance is not significant.en_US
