Abstract: This dissertation aims to discover an optimal sizing approach to obtain the best specifications for a stand-alone photovoltaic power generation system for use in a solar powered car to ensure the complete utilization of the PV array and battery bank for operation at optimal capacity in relation to system power efficiency. The optimal sizing approach is based on the Loss of Power supply Probability (LPSP). The optimization method attempts to identify the optimum configuration that gives the best LPSP value. The decision variables in the optimization procedure are the capacity of the battery used and the power rating of PV modules. Local weather data from 1989 was input into the simulation for this research.
