Abstract: In the primary development of computer sciences, the task of GIS researchers is to project the world into computer database system, from 2D in early stage to 3D or 4D in recent years. Together with the evolution of computer science and technology, researchers have achieved great success in spatial database field. A number of literary works and articles are presented and standard and specification are created. At the same time, since the appearance of temporal database technique in 1980s, temporal database received glorious achievement in principle theory, data type, query language and application technique through plenty of research and practices. Adapted for the future need in database, recent efforts in spatial and temporal data models and database systems have attempted to achieve an appropriate kind of interaction between the two areas. Spatio-temporal databases are proposed for the aim to support extensions to spatial database systems by adding time element so as to better describe our dynamic environment. In the past decade, a substantial number of achievements have been published on the advances in spatio-temporal data model, concept model, and system architecture. But it's far less than the completeness. This research is to carry on the research on spatio-temporal database. In this study, a review of temporal and spatio-temporal query languages has been done to reveal the development of spatio-temporal data model and query languages. A spatio-temporal data model and query language called PSTSQL is proposed in this research for generic spatio-temporal application. PSTSQL provides powerful and comprehensive functions for supporting spatial, temporal and spatio-temporal query. It is built based on postgreSQL. To evaluate the data model and query language, effective comparisons are made to analysis the merits and disadvantages.
