End-user computing at supervisory/managerial level in Hong Kong banking industry : an empirical studyen_US
In information systems, the issues of making effective use of data resources, improving systems strategic planning, and deploying it for competitive advantage have become paramount matters. It transited from supporting individual end-users to supporting business needs. As end-user computing evolved, the user characteristics and organizational factors affecting its success would be different. Management have to review critically the fundamental issues of end-user computing. The objectives of this research are to identify the critical success factors and to evaluate the problems of end-user computing in local banking industry. These issues are explored by questionnaires and interviews to investigate the nature of end-user computing activities, level of support available, benefits derived, problems encountered and possible solutions. It is hypothesized that difference exists amongst end-user demographic factor, computer literacy, training, organizational size, management computer literacy, level of support, native language software, planning, policies, applications and information satisfaction. The results of the analysis indicated that end-users with more training, higher top management computer literacy, and more support are found to exhibit higher level of information satisfaction. End-user support needs also differed by user type. One-way analysis of variance and interview revealed three important end-user computing success factors: (1) end-user training, (2) access to corporate database, and (3) management policies towards end-user computing.en_US
