dcterms.abstractThe safety record of construction industry has always been the worst when it is compared with other industries in Hong Kong. Although efforts have been made by the Government and the contractors to rectify this situation, the status quo still remains. Risk management techniques, which have been proved as effective tools to apply at different aspects of construction management such as project appraisal and resources allocation, has rarely been applied to promote construction safety. The main purpose of this dissertation is to investigate whether risk management is incorporated into the safety management system informally, resulting in ineffective implementation. Or, are the contractors just concentrating on isolated risk management techniques and overlooking other ones which are also critical in risk management? It is intended at the end of this dissertation to highlight the areas that the contractors have overlooked, and suggest directions for improvement. The dissertation started with literature research on the safety performance of construction industry and the risk management. With the critical components of risk safety management identified, a carefully designed questionnaire was set up and sent to all the contractors on List 1 of approved contractors for public works published by Works Branch. The questionnaires were then answered by the contractors and returned to the author. Afterwards, the data collected were analysed with respect to different aspects of management performance parameters. It is the sincere hope of the author that this dissertation can help to reduce the safety statistics of the construction industry to an acceptable level.en_US
