Abstract: Digital music has been sold for over twenty years since CD released. The CD sales takeover vinyl records in late 1980's. The MP3 format became popular in late 1990's, and the digital music retail revenue keep growing nowadays. Until now, the revenue of pay-download business models not yet compensated the fall of CD sales globally. The CD format is still in the market of music retailing. The purpose of this research is to propose a possible success digital music retailing model for the customers who want a physical copy of the music they paid and enjoy the convenience of pay-download simultaneously. It may boost up the revenue of digital music. To estimate the feasibility of the proposed model, a research is taken. Both literature review and survey study are involved. The research started with reviewing the history of digital music retailing. It includes CD, MP3, online pay-download and mobile pay-download etc. After that, different payment models including pay in the physical store, online payment is discussed. A literature review of different kinds of knowledge economy products, like books, games and videos, is taken. It explores why digital music retailing is so different to other products in this digital era. After those reviews, a new retailing model is proposed. To support this proposal, a survey is taken by spreading a questionnaire. The reasons of creating those questions in the questionnaire will be discussed. Finally, the results and findings will be shown after analysis on the information collected in the survey. The proposed model will be reviewed and edited according to the survey result so to bring success to the project.
