| dcterms.abstract | In recent years, there has been a growing concern for learner needs worldwide as a result of the increased demand for more English for Specific Purposes (ESP) courses. 'Needs Analysis' is seen as an important stage in course design, without which the quality of the course cannot be ensured. To be in line with the current development of English Language Teaching which advocates learner autonomy, the contemporary approach to needs analysis is to diagnose needs in a much wider perspective, exploring needs not just in terms of what learners need to know (necessities) but also what they feel they need to know (wants) and which necessities they lack (lacks).In addition, learning needs regarding learners' preferred learning style (strategy) and the resources and constraints of an institution will also be analyzed, with a view to negotiating on any conflicts of needs. This dissertation studies the communicative needs of a group of Technician Level Technical Institute graduate students currently working as Assistant Clothing Merchandisers in Hong Kong. It is hoped that the study will provide useful information for future improvement of the existing instructional programme and raise teachers' awareness of the importance of needs analysis in contributing to the success of a course. | en_US |
