The effects of knee brace on the knee position sense and hamstring reaction time on people with anterior cruciate ligament deficiency before and after muscle fatigueen_US
This study evaluated the effect of knee brace on knee position sense and hamstring reaction time in the knee joint of subjects with anterior cruciate ligament deficiency (ACLD) before and after muscle fatigue. Each subject underwent two sets of tests, active repositioning of the knee joint and the hamstring reaction time towards sudden perturbation of the knee joint. Each set consisted of the braced and unbraced condition, with and without fatigue of the knee musculature. Results showed that the factor of knee brace and fatigue was statistically insignificant in the test of position sense (p=0.246, p=0.169, respectively), but there was a high probability of interaction effect between the two factors (p=0.091). Therefore, further analysis was performed with t-test and the results were highly indicative that fatigue was a significant factor to influence joint position sense when using a knee brace (p=0.061), such that the knee brace produced better effect in the pre-fatigue status. The factor of brace and fatigue were statistically significant in the test of hamstring reaction time (p=0.000; p=0.015, respectively), with the braced condition and the pre-fatigue condition showing better performance. Subjects with ACLD therefore should not rely heavily on functional knee brace during sports activities, especially where fatigue of the knee musculature is very common, in terms of proprioceptive measures.en_US
