The study of the importance and satisfaction on neighborhood characteristicsen_US
There is a commonly expressed view that neighbourhood characteristics have little resonance in Hong Kong people. Moreover, government also has insufficient neighborhood satisfaction information. This study examined the relative importance of the neighbourhood attributes in relation to respondents' overall satisfaction level and the tradeoff between those neighborhoods characteristics in Hong Kong. The findings of this study can enhance the understanding of respondents' perception and evaluation of the satisfaction of different neighborhood attributes. Government planners can tailor-make their tactics and strategies to best meet the residents' needs and expectations. This paper applied the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) to general population survey data in order to find the hierarchical order for Security, Environment, Transportation and Facilities attributes. Meanwhile, a Likert scale rating also was used to reveal whether there are disparities between the relative importance and relative weights in satisfaction with neighbourhood attributes. The results of AHP and Likert-type scale rating collected from the residents from Tseung Kwan O, Ma On Shan and Tung Chung. The result showed that Security was the most important attributes. But Facilities and Interaction with the Neighbourhood were the least important for the respondents. On the other hand, the use of discrete choice analysis enabled to obtain the tradeoff among different major attributes. Transportation was the most important attribute while health facilities were considered insignificant in this study. Quadrant analysis evaluation technique was used to examine respondents' perceived importance and satisfaction of fifteen attributes based on the results of Likert scale. The quadrant analysis illustrated that nearly all attributes fell into the capitalize quadrant with the respondents from Tseung Kwan O and Ma On Shan. However, only seven neighbourhood attributes fell into the capitalize quadrant with the respondents from Tung Chung. No attribute has been identified in the 'monitor' and 'maintain' quadrant. The long-term significance of this study is to enhance the understanding of different neighbourhood attributes associated with the new towns. Finally, this study is useful for government to prioritizing the implementation of the town-planning strategy to best meet the residents' needs and expectations.en_US
