Strategies and independent learners learning english : a case studyen_US
This case study sets out to explore the range of language learning strategies used by 6 independent language learners studying English at the English Language Study Centre (ELSC) at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University and discusses the efficacy of implementing a strategies-based instruction programme at the Study Centre. The study, spanning a 6-week period, is in three parts. Using a combination of quantitative and qualitative research methods it first, attempts to document the range of language learning strategies used by the 6 independent language learners learning English at the ELSC in order to find out the students' frequency of strategy use. The Oxford (1990) Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL), covering cognitive, metacognitive, social and affective strategies was used to investigate this. Second, a subset of the SILL dealing with metacognition received closer attention as these strategies are considered by many researchers especially important for independent language learners, even though such strategies may be underused. Third, it argues for learner / strategy training at the ELSC so that the effectiveness and use of strategies by independent learners can be enhanced. Directions for future research arising from this case study are discussed.en_US
