dcterms.abstractSurveys on the professional and organizational commitments had been performed in other countries to have better understanding of commitment in the workplace. However, no similar study had been conducted in the local context. This study investigated the levels and relationship of the professional and organizational commitments in physiotherapists in the local health care community. Ninety-six self-administered questionnaires were sent out to physiotherapists in six physiotherapy centers in Hong Kong. The return rate was 66.7 %. Results indicated that physiotherapists in the population had significantly higher professional commitment than organizational commitment in all the three commitment components, namely affective, continuance and normative commitments. In addition, there was no significant correlation between organizational and professional commitment in affective, normative and continuance components. These findings indicated that the respondents were able to maintain a high degree of professional commitment without perceiving undue conflict from the demands of the organization. In addition, employer are encouraged to formulate strategies to promote both professional and organizational commitments of its employees in order to further promote their job satisfaction and work performance.en_US
