Sport participation of children and adolescents with physical disabilities in Hong Kongen_US
Although sport is beneficial, participation is influenced by factors such as individuals' disabilities and parental values. The purpose of this study was to explore the sport participation pattern of children and adolescents with physical disabilities during leisure and factors that affect sport participation in terms of children's characteristics, parents' characteristics and parents' value. This study consisted of two stages. Stage one involved development of a parent questionnaire and examination of the content validity and test retest reliability. Stage two examined the sport participation pattern based on 387 questionnaires collected from parents of children with physical disabilities studying in special schools in Hong Kong. Result showed that 47% of children (N=182) did not perform physical activities during leisure, implying a sedentary life style. It is found that sport participation is not related to demographic characteristics of the children and their parents but to the children's extracurricular activities participation and the parents' habit. In addition, parents' perception of safety and their lack of knowledge on suitable types and venue of sport are significant hindering factors. Importance of promotion of sport by professionals for children with physical disabilities can be grounded by these findings.en_US
