| dcterms.abstract | Churches in Hong Kong are different from those in foreign countries. For example, in Europe, America and Singapore, their churches are normally built as independent buildings and so the churches are of independently stand-alone type. However, due to the high land cost and dense population, the churches in Hong Kong are mostly located in high-rise buildings such as commercial buildings and residential buildings. Although churches of independent type are also found in Hong Kong (See Figure A.I to Figure A.4), this study only focuses on churches located inside commercial buildings (See Figure A.5 to Figure A.I) and residential buildings (See Figure A.8 to Figure A. 12). These churches alter the original building usage. And the fire safety provisions in a typical building may not be sufficient for a church purpose. Therefore, this study examines the fire safety in a church located inside a commercial building and another one located inside a residential building. The smoke and evacuation patterns are obtained by using the Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS) and SIMULEX respectively. Besides, a questionnaire survey has been conducted to find out people's satisfaction with the church environment and their fire safety knowledge. Based on the results, the Fire Safety Management (FSM) Scheme is suggested for the churches in order to minimize the pre-movement time so as to reduce the total evacuation time and ensure more effective evacuation. | en_US |
