dcterms.abstractThe Hong Kong hotel and tourism industry has a shortage of staff who is competent in Information Technology [IT]. Research shows the employers are not satisfied with the skills equipped by the hotel and tourism management [HTM] graduates. In other words, teaching in the university environment may not meet with the industry requirements. The purpose of this study was to determine the extent of gap identified in education-employment relationship (IT) in the hotel and tourism industry in HTM graduates perspective. In this study, data were collected by questionnaires from 117 respondents graduated from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University [PolyU], the only institution in Hong Kong that offers HTM programs. The respondents rated the importance of IT skills at the workplace, the level of teaching in the HTM programs and the self-evaluated competence level of IT. Six dimensions (40 items) namely information preparing (IP), information handling (IH), communications (COM), management information systems (MIS), applications of software (AS) and evaluating (EV) were examined in this study. Among these six dimensions, the biggest gap was identified in the management information systems. Also significant difference was identified between several demographic variables of graduates with the perception of importance of IT skills in the workplace and the self-evaluated competence in their job. It was recommended that the study findings would be beneficial to HTM educators for reference and future planning. The educators should make appropriate administrative decisions to close the gap identified and provide competitive students for the hotel and tourism [HT] industry. This would enable Hong Kong HT industry to remain competitive with the growing demand for IT in the global business.en_US
