Abstract: Business process reengineering is alive and well received in Hong Kong, particularly in the banking industry where the reengineering works are largely focused on back office operation. The major reasons for the reengineering revolution in the Hong Kong banking industry are that the competition among the banks has become more fierce, the deregulation of interest rate on fixed deposits tends to reduce the banks' profit margins, and the rapid rising in labor costs in the past few years has also increased substantially the operational costs of the banks. The Shanghai Commercial Bank Ltd., which is a rather smaller bank in Hong Kong, has also to face the turbulent environments and has to tackle with the unfavorable changes. To struggle for survival and to adapt to environmental changes, the management of the bank has started to review its various internal operations and it is decided that the cheque and electronic clearing processing operation in the bank could be reengineered for drastic improvement in efficiency of work and for a considerable reduction in the operational costs. To achieve this, an reengineering team has been set up for carrying out the reengineering project. I was selected as one of the team members to take part in the reengineering. As a whole, the reengineering project has been found to perform successfully, though the implementation has not yet taken place until next year. To me, the reengineering project is an interesting studying subject and therefore I choose it as my MBA project. My study will cover the areas from the start of reengineering project to the formulation of the implementation plan by the reengineering team. The report will not only examine the analysis of the situation but also include my reflections on the process of carrying out the reengineering project successfully. As you travel through the pages, you will find : - Chapter 1 "Introduction" describes the objectives and significance of the project. - Chapter 2 "Company Background" will provide a brief description on the company background and its internal and external environments. - Chapter 3 "Conceptional Framework and Methodology" reviews the concepts, basic principles and the methodology for business process reengineering. - Chapter 4 "Data Analysis, Interpretation and Implication" gives a detailed analysis and interpretation on the data findings of the reengineering project. - Chapter 5 "Redesign the Operation" presents the new process flow, the objectives to be achieved and the measurement tools for continuous improvement on the reengineered operation. - Chapter 6 "Recommendation and Conclusion" provides the implementation method, describes the problems encountered in the project, and gives consideration on the critical success factors for success process redesign and implementation, with specific reference to this case study.
