dcterms.abstractThis paper reports results of a study on the relationship between pay referents and pay satisfaction in Hong Kong. The two questionnaires, pay referent questionnaire and pay satisfaction questionnaires (PSQ), that were developed in the West were used. The result indicated that comparison with current living need was the most important pay referent for people in Hong Kong to evaluate their pay satisfaction level. Moreover, current living need referent and personal salary history referent were found to have significant relationship with particular pay satisfaction dimensions. This suggests that traditional pay policies that attempt to address pay dissatisfaction that result from comparison with these two pay referents might not be helpful.en_US
