| dcterms.abstract | Logistics operations can encompass a number of related functional areas. In its broadest sense, it can include traffic and transportation, warehousing, import and export operations, inventory control, purchasing, and customer service or sales order entry. Therefore, a lot of information systems have been developed to support those logistics operations. Although those of the systems are working together to support the cross-functional logistics activities, each system is designed for one or several functional uses, without excluding the use by others (Shipper Today, Vol. 26, 2003). Duplicated input of data to those systems is highly time-consuming and waste of human resource. Besides, the data in the systems may contain errors due to the input mistakes. (Transport Developments and Innovations in an Evolving World, 2004). There is a high demand in developing industry processes and information standards to provide the capability to share and exchange data between systems. For short-term, it is hard to establish the standards as there are too many kinds of logistics systems (Logistics Quarterly, 2003). However, it is possible to develop a data exchange model to exchange the data for different logistics systems within an organization as the first step to develop the industry standard. This paper focuses on sourcing-out the Information Exchange Model for supporting the logistics operations and optimizing the movement of information. | en_US |
