Abstract: This dissertation investigates the problem of approximate query answering in the context of a database system. A cooperative query answering (CQA) system is a database which can provides approximate answers when the original query condition cannot be matched exactly. Traditional query processing only accepts precisely specified queries and only provides exact answers, thus requiring users to fully understand the problem domain and the database schema, but returning limited or even null information if the exact answer is not available. However, in practice, user may not have a precise notion of what he is looking for, especially in the real estate agent industry. In addition, users may get frustrated with the null answer. To remedy such a restriction, a prototype of CQA system is implemented to provide approximate answers when the original query condition cannot be matched exactly. A browsing mechanism is employed to assist in the retrieval process. With the "browser", vague queries can be entered into CQA system until sufficient information is obtained to the extent that the user can construct a query for his request. In addition, when processing of queries responds with an empty (null) answer to the user, a query generalization mechanism is used to give an approximate answer with explanation for that empty answer.
