A study of the learning styles and teaching preferences of the hospital-based student nurses in Hong Kongen_US
This study was on the learning styles and teaching preferences of the hospital-based student nurses in Hong Kong. The purpose of it was to explore the learning styles of the first, second and third year student nurses in Hong Kong, and to identify if they have any special preference for the teaching strategies. The sample consisted of 519 first, second and third year student nurses from KCH, KWH, PMH and QEH. Data were collected by using the Kolb's Learning Style Inventory, Study Process Questionnaire and Questionnaire on the teaching preference. Major findings indicated that the hospital-based nursing students in Hong Kong had higher surface and deep approaches. A fairly even distribution of the four learning styles was reported, with most of them were assimilators with abstract learning styles. Their most preferred teaching strategy was the use of the audiovisual aids and the least preferred teaching strategy was library work with self-directed learning. A variety of active learning strategies such as role-play, games, case studies were favoured by the nursing students. Lecture still received higher support from the nursing students. They tended to become less deep in their studying as they approach their final year of study, while the numbers of abstract learners and the preferences for self-directed learning had been increased after years of training.en_US
