dcterms.abstractThis dissertation describes the work done on construction of productivity improvement tools in the domain of toy engineering design. Some related work on latest methodologies in engineering design are being discussed. The nature of toy engineering design is described and some problems from the domain are discussed. A model of the engineering design process is presented. The foundation of the proposed design model is based on Case-Based Reasoning (CBR) and Knowledge-Based Design (KBD) approach. A prototype model is implemented to solve real life design problems--algorithmic and ill-structured. It consists of three design modules: Master Assembly, Motor and Gear Box, and Mechanical Clutches and Spring. The control structure is hierarchical and modular such that various programming languages can be used in module development--PROLOG and C++ in the prototype. The modular architecture also offers great flexibility for expansion to include additional modules and modification to upgrade old modules. The analysis shows that modules with CBR can solve new design problems by retrieving, adapting and combining old designs to support conceptual design. Modules with KBD provide domain experts for specific design applications to support and improve human decision. As a result, the prototype developed under this study can reduce design cost and cycle time, rapidly consider a wider range of design alternatives, improve product quality and ultimately increase design productivity.en_US
