dcterms.abstractA new integrated terminal and feeder network via Pearl River Delta (PRD) is developed to sustain Hong Kong as a transshipment hub in South China. Supplier collaboration in manufacturing industry shows significant improvement on efficiency and productivity in production process. In this research, it was concentrated on the feasibility of the collaboration between Hong Kong container terminal operators and feeder operators in PRD to streamline the transshipment process and provide value-added service to the shipping lines. Based on the business process re-engineering concept, the whole process of transshipment would be reengineered. First of all, 5-force analysis would be used to analyze the industry environment and find out its competitive advantage. Then value chain analysis would be used to identify the problem of the process. After obtained the results from the analysis, a proposed new business model was formulated and market research was conducted with the customers and potential collaborators for comment and recommendation. And the new business model would be validated by a case study. It was found that Hong Kong container terminal operators should collaborate with feeder operators in Pearl River Delta to provide fast, efficient and reliable services to the customers. Moreover, most of the paper-works and coordination works which were time-consuming of the customers could be eliminated by streamlining the transshipment process and implementing a portal. With this collaboration model in place, container terminal operators can line up the critical mass, by consolidating containers from several small feeders to a scaled feeder, to establish a cost effective and high efficiency pipeline to capture throughput from PRD.en_US
