Abstract: The dissertation aims to explore the main factors that influence the demand for telecom services in China. An analysis of the fixed line telecom services in Jilin province reveals that the main influencing factors have changed after the telecom reform in 2001. The result of Chow Breakpoint Test confirmed this point. The research examines the role of the factors that shape the telecom demand in Jilin. These factors include the price telecom services, income of consumers, the prices of alternative products, technology, service quality and social environment. The Granger causality test was employed to test for causality between the demand for telecom and these influencing factors. Based on the proposed model, the study identified the co-integration relationships between the demand variables. Therefore, the demand relationships were examined using the cointegration and error correction models (ECM). The empirical results suggested that the demand models fit the data well and the residuals of the models follow the white noise process. The study also compared the model's performance when the demand variables were measured by either the total number of calls and by the average telecom expenditure by consumers. The differences in price elasticities were also examined when different measures of demand were used. These price elasticities formed the bases for adopting different pricing strategies by the service providers. Due to the data limitation, the study only focused on Jilin province. The data collected from both the public and industry sources were used to examine the determinants of the demand for the fixed line telecom services in Jilin. The frequencies of most variables were annual with the exception of the service quality data, which is monthly (it was concerted to annual series in the modeling exercise). The substitute effect was investigated using the qualitative approach due to the unavailability of the data.
