| dcterms.abstract | Inter-modal transportation leads to transportation services having a reasonable trade-off between cost and transit time by enabling shippers to select carrier combination that offers the most efficient, least expensive service. While many factors influence the development of inter-modalism, the most important factors have been the effects of governments' public policy and recent developments in information technology. Practically, a substantial amount of airfreight is essentially inter-modal and involves transshipment across countries. As different from the past micro-management viewpoint, the Inter-modal Transshipment Model tries to propose a structure for decision making and strategy formulation from the perspective of logistics services providers. An effective model must take into account the two critical success factors: degree of Customs facilitation and extent of technology application. The most ideal strategy balances both of the driving forces. The proposed web-based network boosts the confidence of Customs over security concerns and tracing ability, thus leading to reduction of redundant processes. Also, the need for one-stop process actually drives for the demand for a highly interconnected network among different intelligent partners. The concept of a Fully Integrated Model hinges on balancing the need of service differentiation and the control over operations costs. The concept is expected to be transferable to other kinds of inter-modal transport and more general logistical systems. | en_US |
