Noise reduction by balcony on building facadeen_US
This dissertation investigates the reduction or reinforcement of traffic noise by balconies on building facade. The study was focused on rectangular shape balconies with solid or open low front and/or sidewalls. Experimental model of scale 1:10 consisted of nine balconies on a rigid and reflective panel, arranged in 3 x 3 array, was set up to simulate the acoustic of the balcony on building. Line noise sources at floor level and at different separation distances from the building were used to simulation the effect of traffic noise. The line sources were oriented parallel, 45-degree and 90-degree to the facade. Noise levels at the facade were measured before and after the balconies were in position. Before the noise measurement, the noise attenuation performance of balcony was visualized using linear light source in lieu of the noise source. Common noise descriptor equivalent A-weighted sound pressure level, sound pressure level at one-third octave band and the average insertion loss were calculated from the experimental data and present in graphical form. Theoretical model of noise propagation from a stationary line source at ground level to the rear wall of the balcony was established and applied to calculate the acoustic performance of the balconies. The calculated noise reduction or reinforcement was compared with the experimental result. Both the measured and calculated insertion losses indicated that the resonance or reflection within the balcony offset the noise shielding effect by introducing the balconies if it has a ceiling slab.en_US
