Abstract: Apart from city tourism, there is also another kind of tourism that can be introduced in Hong Kong, that is, nature-based tourism. In recent years, Hong Kong Tourism Board is putting effort in promoting eco-tourism and cultural heritage tourism in Hong Kong. Hong Kong Tourism Board surveys also suggest that Hong Kong has potential to develop eco-tourism and heritage tourism. However, it seems that tourists have more interest on cultural heritage tourism than nature-based tourism in Hong Kong. The actual demand for nature-based tourism in Hong Kong is unknown. Because of this, a study has been conducted to see if there is a "real" potential of developing nature-based tourism in Hong Kong.
The researcher has interviewed the existing nature tour operators and some industrial persons to see, in their point of view, the present situation of nature-based tourism development in the territory. The result is that, it seems that there is potential demand of nature-based tour in Hong Kong as research showed that the tourists have interest. However, it still needs a lot of government effort in order to change the image of Hong Kong. And there is no sign that the government will do. In terms of product, Hong Kong has good local recreational products, but are they good enough to become tourist attractions? This can be mystery. The tour operations believe that the hiking routes in Hong Kong are world class, but the tourists may think the other way. While the market opportunity seems very limited at present. Visitors prefer going to other destinations for nature-based tours. Hong Kong is not seen as a competitive destination for this market.
