| dcterms.abstract | Plantar Fasciitis is one of the most common disorders of the foot. Its exact etiology is unclear. One of the possible causes is the overuse and the repetitive micro-trauma of the plantar fascia or the aponeurosis. The present study is to evaluate the effectiveness of the new adjustable dorsiflexion night splint in combination with orthotic insole in treating patients with plantar fasciitis. Forty-eight patients with plantar fasciitis participated in this prospective case controlled study with informed consent. Patients were assigned into either one of the two treatment groups. Patients in group A were treated with orthotic insoles only. Patients in group B received similar orthotic treatment but together with adjustable dorsiflexion night splints. Physical examination for patients was carried out at the first meeting session as the baseline (Week 0). Follow up of patients was performed after 2 weeks (Week 2) and 8 weeks (Week 8). Foot Function Index (FFI) questionnaires were collected at all these three sessions. Forty-three patients completed the study. Two-way Repeated Measures Analysis of Variance was performed for data analysis. Significant improvement (p<0.05) was seen with the presence of the adjustable dorsiflexion night splint. In conclusion, the new adjustable dorsiflexion night splint is an effective orthotic device for treating plantar fasciitis. | en_US |
