dcterms.abstractThere is an increasing demand of using more powerful or higher capacity equipment in the construction industry throughout the world. Such a trend is amplified by the rapid growth in the construction field in Hong Kong. Although Environmental Protection Department (EPD) had published Technical Memorandum detailing the assessment of noise from site, it is important that both the equipment suppliers and the contractors put their effort in reducing the noise generated. It is not long ago that contractors began to use silenced type equipment. A study was carried out to reduce the noise level of a 220kw hydraulic power pack. The original design of the power pack is a local made machine with a poorly designed enclosure. The noise level is 7dB above "standard" powered mechanical equipment stated in EPD's Technical Memorandum. In this study, the noise level is reduced to this level. New materials such as G.I. sheets, acoustic louvre, better muffler and sound traps had been employed. The author had shown that it is rather difficult to have an accurate estimation on the noise level during the design stage. Acoustic data for the machine components are usually not available. Design of acoustic enclosure for such equipment rely much on measurement of the prototype.en_US
