The flow characteristic and particle deposition in human upper airwaysen_US
In this thesis, the air flow and particle motion in human lung airway are numerically investigated using CFD technique. Firstly, the 1st-order steady flow, 2nd-order steady flow and unsteady models was used to simulate the flow in laminar regime to comparison the flow characteristic and particle deposition efficiencies among these three models. The upper airway model was generated from CT scan images which represented the real airways. Computation carried out in the Reynolds number of 600 and 720 while stokes number ranging from 0.00014 to 0.022. The results show that the larynx jet has serious effect on the flow structure and particle deposition patterns in trachea. Due to the laryngeal effect, some turbulence features can be expected in trachea. Therefore, laminar, LRN k-omega and large eddy simulation models were used to understand the turbulence features. Computations were carried out at Reynolds number of 1200 and 3600. Flow field was studied in detail. The results show that large eddy simulation is more sensitive than the other two models.en_US
