| dcterms.abstract | This was a cross-sectional study with the aim to identify the risk factors of adolescent smoking in terms of personal characteristics and personalities in Hong Kong. Moreover, it aimed to identify the contributing factors of personal characteristics and personalities of adolescent smoking between male and female. Subjects of the study were the secondary students in Hong Kong. They were recruited by convenient sampling. Questionnaire was developed according to the factors of personal characteristics of adolescent smoking stated in the review written by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in 2001. There were 644 secondary students recruited in January 2010. There were 494 (76.7%) of the secondary students as non-smokers, 125 (19.4%) of them as ever tried smokers and 25 (3.9%) of them as regular smokers. There was 361 (56.1%) male and 283 (43.9%) female secondary students. The percentage of male and female regular smokers was the same (3.9%). Two risk factors of smoking in personal characteristics and personalities were identified for both male and female students, these were, low level of behavioral control and high smoking intention. One additional risk factor of smoking were identified for male secondary students, it was low socioeconomic status in terms of resident types. Four additional risk factors of smoking were identified for female secondary students, these were, educated mothers, high level of rebelliousness, low sociability and few usage of chance as locus of control. Contributing factors in personal characteristics and personalities were identified for smoking of male and female secondary students. One common contributing factor for both male and female students was high level of perceived smoking intention (OR: 44.04 for male and 8.45 for female). Additional three contributing factors were identified in male secondary students, these were, frequent use of non-productive coping method (OR: 2.01), seldom to solve problem as coping (OR: 0.46) and low level of socioeconomic status in terms of resident type (OR: 0.39). Two additional contributing factors were identified for female secondary students only, these were, low level of behavioral control (OR: 0.26) and high level of rebelliousness (OR: 3.3). Different reasons of smoking of secondary students in personal characteristics and personalities were shown in this study in Hong Kong. Different strategies should be focused for male and female smoking prevention and cessation. | en_US |
