Abstract: The study was performed for optimization of the cold pad batch dyeing via Taguchi methods. The cold pad batch dyeing is regarded as one of the environmental friendly and energy saving dyeing method. The Taguchi methods are quality improvement methods based on the statistical approach. It minimizes the number of experiment trials and less time consuming, and hence reduces the experimental costs. Besides, the results from the Taguchi methods can improve the process without increase the costs with existing machinery and equipment. Based on the results from the Taguchi methods, the optimum dyeing condition had been determined. It had been successfully confirmed by laboratory experiments and implemented in the bulk. Overall, both the colour yield was improved and the effect of hydrolysis was reduced without had adverse effects in fastness. Moreover, the influence of the uncontrollable factors including difference in fabric sources and fluctuation of ambient temperature was minimized. Also, the optimum dyeing condition was found to use less amount of strong alkali that was enough to give optimum dyeing results. It was different in the general recommendation from most of dyestuff suppliers. They always recommended to use more strong alkali according to the dye concentration. So far, there is only few cases to use Taguchi methods in dyeing and finishing industry. The present study is expected to gain experiences as a foundation to further apply Taguchi methods in other sections of the industry.
