Abstract: Relatively little is known about the psychological influence of the sound of dental equipments in dental treatment on human anxiety. The aim of the current study is to exam the influence of the dental sound by establishing a hierarchy of anxiety provoking capacities of a large set of dental stimuli to find out the rank order of dental equipments sound. An additional aim is to determine the difference of the anxiety provoked by sound in relation to gender, age, language and other demographic factors. A questionnaire survey was presented to total 407 participants and the data was analyzed with the help of SPSS. The results indicates that the ranks of the stimuli related to dental equipments sound were relatively high among the tota1 73 anxiety provoking stimuli (21 and 32 for "the sound of dental drill" and "the sound of scaling teeth" respectively), which mean that dental equipments sound would have a huge effect on the patients. From the total sample size, dental trait anxiety, age, language and dental check-up state have a significant influence to the dental anxiety provoking capacity, however, dental anxiety provoking capacity do not differ with regard to dental experience, gender and employment state. The statistic data showed that 30% of the total participants would feel quite unpleasant and even very unpleasant feeling about the sound of dental drill. This indicates that a large part of people would be anxious with the sound of dental equipments. Dental equipments sound would consider as an important influence to the dental treatments.
