dcterms.abstractSeveral studies have proved that ferrate(VI) is a powerful oxidant and it can be used in water and wastewater treatment processes with its roles of an oxidant, a coagulant or also a disinfectant. Methyl mercaptan is a kind of odorous compounds which can be found in sewage, composting plant, landfill sites, and industrial wastewater. In this study, the oxidation reaction between methyl mercaptan and ferrate(VI) in aqueous solution has been studied using a stopped-flow spectrophotometer. Firstly, the experimental results showed that the stability of ferrate(VI) increase with an increased alkalinity in aqueous solution. The kinetics of the ferrate(VI) oxidation of methyl mercaptan was found to follow the first order kinetic model for each reactant. The rate constant of this reaction was found to be 830.42·M⁻¹·s⁻¹ in 10M NaOH solution. It was found that when the concentration of methyl mercaptan was in excess, stoichiometic molar ratio (Δ[Fe(VI)]:Δ[CH₃SH]) was determined to be 2.2:1 in 10M NaOH solution. Furthermore, in an excess of ferrate(VI) concentration over initial concentration of methyl mercaptan the methyl mercaptan is fully oxidized to sulfate, and stoichiometic ratio of [Fe(VI)]: [SO₄²⁻] determined to be 6:1 in 10M NaOH solution, the result indicated that some intermediate products of methyl mercaptan have been appeared during ferrate(VI) oxidation of methyl mercaptan process. This study provides some data and information of self-decomposition of ferrate(VI), kinectics of methyl mercaptan oxidation with ferrate(VI), and the stoichiometic molar ratio of ferrate(VI) oxidation of methyl mercaptan. The result indicate that ferrate(VI) can be used as an effective oxidant to remove methyl mercaptan from wastewater.en_US
