Abstract: An energy-saving and sustainable design in buildings decreases carbon dioxide emission into the atmosphere. The Remote Solar Source Lighting System, RSSL, is one of the strategies to promote energy-saving and enhance occupant satisfaction by creating an ideal daylight environment within a space. Therefore, this study seeks to evaluate the performance of the RSSL system by computer software simulations called "Zemax-EE", experiments and site measurements. Also, different efficiencies in various components in the systems and payback period were determined. Several influence factors including different types of light pipes, cleanness index, configurations of the systems were all investigated. Since there is no standard of optical fibers within the lighting industries and no detailed design guideline for application of the Remote Solar Source Lighting System, in this study, a design framework was developed to calculate the performance of optical fibers used in the system and to provide an accurate lighting intensity on the working plane if different RSSL systems were selected in the design. This design aimed to provide a guideline for designers for the application of the RSSL system in the building in Hong Kong. Based on results from the site measurements and software simulations, it is found that the end-emitting optical fibers are the optimum light pipe used in the RSSL system when comparing side-emitting optical fibers and metal light pipes. Since high lighting transmission property and high flexibility in construction make the system more reliable and practicable. On the other hand, neglecting the investment cost and payback which were calculated in this dissertation, the introduction of daylight into indoor is a trendy and sustainable design, since daylight makes the environment more peaceful and relaxing comparing with those electric lightings. The Hong Kong International Airport and Festival Walk are the examples of using daylight for lighting purpose. Therefore, raising the awareness of green energy is more important than payback.
