dcterms.abstractThis project aims to study the theory and applications of Frame Relay (FR). FR is a wide area transport protocol specified under CCITT I-series recommendation I.122. The standard for frame relay specifies an interface, and not a service. Just as X.25 describes an interface to a packet network, the frame relay standard (I.122/ANSI T1S1) describes an interface to a private/public frame relay network. Frame Relay is a form of packet switching. However, it "switches" data at frame level (level 2). As opposed to X.25's level 3 switching, FR does not require detail network information. It contains less overhead which in term improves the bandwidth utilisation. Furthermore, FR leaves flow control & error recovery to intelligent end-points. This releases the processing time required at each node, and therefore improves the overall network response time. Simulation technique is deployed in two case studies, both of which are related to performance analysis of frame relay networks. And PlanNetTM is the powerful simulation tool used in this project. The simulation engine of PlanNetTM works with a specially designed set of plug and play network modules. These modules represent actual elements of networks existing today, and each module contains one or more parameters that are used to configure that module. In the first case study, a multi-vendor computer network is investigated. Anticipated network growth and the impact on performance is analysed based on existing facility. The result from simulation indicates that the delay cannot be improved when we increase the link speed. In fact, this case study shows that network expansion and migration is not just a simple task of upgrading the link speed. The solution actually requires a detailed planning of a newer technology and an appropriate network topology. In the second part of this case study, a new network topology with Frame Relay is introduced to improve performance. The new design can improve the network resiliency & anticipate the future expansion. And the result from simulation shows that the delay is improved when compare with the original network. In the second study, frame relay network is compared to current point-to-point leased circuit in terms of delay, utilisation and other performance measures. The study shows Frame Relay allows user to have additional bandwidth for bursty traffic. This feature benefits the end-users in terms of delay and utilisation. In addition, as the number of users grows, the performance can be anticipated by careful planning of CIR & EIR.en_US
