Temperature variations of a supertall structure : field measurement and numerical simulationen_US
The study of temporal and spatial temperature variations of civil engineering structures under solar radiation and environmental effects is the first step in the analysis of their thermal effects, which are non-neglectable to supertall structures. A case of the Canton Tower (formerly known as the Guangzhou TV and Sightseeing Tower) is investigated, via examining the structural health monitoring (SHM) data as well as numerical simulation. Temperature measurement data from the long-term SHM system were readily available. Those data are compared with ambient air temperature and at different locations in both sunny days and non-sunny days. Statistical results of the daily temperature difference are worked out. For the finite element numerical simulation, prerequisites especially a sunny day solar radiation model is needed and discussed in the dissertation. Some computer code is written for preparing the complex boundary conditions as input in the finite element analysis. The transient thermal analysis is conducted on typical sections. Good agreement is reached between the simulated results and the measurements from the SHM system. Parametric study is conducted as well. The temperature differences obtained by examining the measurements and numerical simulation also lead to a same pattern describing the temperature variations of the supertall structure.en_US
