Abstract: A high speed data source is very important for the study of the design of a high speed optical communication system. Field programmable gate array(FPGA) integrates a vast number of functions, which attracts much attention of people working in the field of communication for using it to implement flexibly the transmitter, receiver and system test and measurement systems . In this project, FPGA, high speed electronic multiplexer(MUX) and optical I/Q modulator are used together to implement a28-Gbaud 16-QAM transmitter to support the development of high speed optical communication systems. Comparing with commonly used electronic pulse pattern generator (PPG), the implemented system offers an effective and economical solution with the flexibility of implementing many customer defined data patterns. The principle and implementation of each component in the design and demonstration of the FPGA based transmitter are described in detail. Some testing results are also given.
