Thermal properties of lightweight concrete wall using furnace bottom ash (FBA)en_US
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of Furnace Bottom Ash (FBA) and Silica Fume (SF) in enhancing the performance of Lightweight Aggregate Concrete (LWAC). Two series of concrete mixtures were prepared to access the fresh, hardened and durability properties of the concrete. In the first series, the normal aggregate concrete (NAC) as control concrete, LWAC with different FBA replacement ratio of Crushed Fine Stone (CFS) were prepared. In the second series, based on the LWAC with 50% FBA replacement ratio mix proportion, 10% of cement content SF were added to work together with different types of Lightweight Aggregates. The results on fresh concrete shown that Lightweight Aggregates and FBA increase concrete workability, while Silica Fume decreases slump value. The results on mechanical properties shown that Lightweight Aggregates and FBA have negative effects on concrete mechanical properties, while Silica Fume compensates concrete strength loss due to LWAs incorporation. The results on durability properties shown that proper volume of FBA helps preventing accelerated carbonation, but LWACs with FBA shown higher charge-passed volume than NAC in Chloride Ion Penetration test. Silica Fume improves concrete durability properties. The results on thermal properties tests indicated that there is a relationship between concrete thermal conductivity K value and concrete oven-dried density, which can be expressed as: kc = AeB+d Where Kc is thermal conductivity value in W/m K; d is oven-dried density in Kg/m³ ; A and B are constants. This equation revealed that the lower the density, the lower the concrete thermal conductivity, and the better the insulation property can be achieved. Results on thermal properties also revealed that LWACs have better insulation properties than NAC, and that there was no obvious difference on K value caused by different types of LWA or by Silica Fume incorporation. Take mechanical properties, durability properties and insulation requirements into consideration, LWAC prepared with higher crushing value Lightweight Aggregates with 30%-50% FBA replacement ratio of CFS and proper volume of SF can achieve the goal of developing environmentally friendly building materials.en_US
