An investigation of lay knowledge of physical education teachers in the emergency management of dental trauma in Hong Kongen_US
The prognosis of traumatised teeth depends on largely on prompt and appropriate emergency management. Previous studies highlighted the need for educational campaigns aimed at members of the lay public such as school teachers whom likely to be involved in the emergency management of dental trauma. Further studies revealed that their level of lay knowledge in management of dental trauma was poor. Unfortunately, there is no available data in this particular area. A total of 166 teachers of physical education from 65 secondary schools in Hong Kong (65% response rate) responded to a postal questionnaire related to their knowledge of the emergency treatment of dental injuries. The majority - 164 (98.80%) of the respondents have received formal teaching training and had been teaching physical education for more than 5 years (83.73%). With one exception, all teachers have received first-aid training, but only eight of them recalled that they have received advice on the management of dental trauma. Concerning tooth fracture, 118 respondents (71.08%) gave an appropriate answer. However, only 29 teachers (17.47%) gave an appropriate answer related to the avulsion of a permanent tooth. There was no statistical significant difference in giving correct answers by teachers who had their first-aid training at their teacher training and those had the training subsequently after graduation. Also, there was no statistical significant difference in giving correct answers between male and female respondents and different age groups. Over 60% of the respondents (102) indicated it was 'very urgent' to seek professional assistance if a permanent tooth has been avulsed, but they had little knowledge of the correct procedures for replanting or transporting avulsed teeth. Only 15 respondents (9%) knew that milk was the medium of choice for transporting avulsed teeth. Finally, over 90% of respondents (157) indicated that they had never received advice on the emergency procedures for the management of dental trauma. The present study showed that the level of lay knowledge of management of dental injuries in a selected of physical education teachers in Hong Kong were inadequate and educational campaigns are necessary to improve their emergency management of dental injuries.en_US
