Abstract: This study provides different insights on residents' perceptions toward a pre-establishment tourism project, namely Shanghai Disney Resort (SHDR). Few studies have been conducted which examine and solicit local community opinions of a tourism project at its pre-development stage. Local residents' level of awareness, expectations, intention for patronage, concerns and suggestions of SHDR and their perceptions toward its impacts have been addressed through a descriptive qualitative study involving in-depth interviews with residents who live in Chuansha Town (where SHDR is located). It was found that: 1. Residents' level of awareness of Walt Disney Company and its theme park was relatively low, due to their limited exposure to various Disney products; 2. Residents perceived this project positively in general, although both the benefits and costs of this project were recognized. 3. Most residents indicated their intention to visit SHDR when it opens. 4. Residents expect queue-free, family-friendly attractions and mementos to be provided in SHDR. 5. A 200RMB entry fee was suggested by residents as an acceptable price. 6. Residents rated moderated queuing issue, constantly offering new attractions and events, and providing satisfactory service as important factors that would affect their decision to make repeat visits to SHDR. In conclusion, valuable information and insights for the SHDR joint venture company is provided in this study, as it plans, designs, markets, and manages this project. Such information will help to facilitate the successful launch and long-term sustainability of SHDR.
